Chapter-03: Evolution of the Agricultural System in the Digital Era

Few developments in recent decades have altered farming as fundamentally as the arrival of digital technology. This chapter offers a wide-ranging, multidisciplinary look at how agricultural systems have evolved in the digital era beginning with pre-industrial subsistence practices and moving through mechanization and precision agriculture, all the way to today’s world of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, robotics, blockchain, and satellite-based remote sensing. Drawing on peer-reviewed research, policy analyses, and evidence from every inhabited continent, the chapter examines digital agriculture through technological, environmental, economic, social, governance, and ethical perspectives.
