Synopsis

Agriculture remains the foundation of India's socioeconomic fabric, engaging approximately 54.6 per cent of the total workforce and contributing 18.4 per cent to Gross Value Added. The rapid proliferation of digital technologies encompassing the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), remote sensing, precision agriculture platforms, and digital public infrastructure has inaugurated a transformative moment for Indian agriculture. Simultaneously, the Himalayan Agro-Ecological zone, spanning Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the North-Eastern hill states, presents both a compelling frontier for digital intervention and a deeply challenging terrain for adoption. This chapter undertakes a systematic, research-augmented inquiry into the opportunities, structural challenges, and forward-looking pathways of digital agriculture in India, with particularised focus on the Himalayan region. Drawing upon a comprehensive review of peer-reviewed literature, policy documents, empirical studies, and field-level evidence, the analysis reveals that while digital agriculture holds unprecedented potential to enhance productivity, climate resilience, and market access, its diffusion across Himalayan smallholders is critically constrained by infrastructural deficits, digital illiteracy, terrain-driven inaccessibility, and the feminisation of mountain agriculture consequent upon sustained male out-migration. The chapter argues for a differentiated, context-sensitive approach to digital agriculture policy that prioritises mountain-specific solutions, inclusive governance frameworks, and capacity-building as necessary preconditions for technological uptake. The study concludes with actionable policy insights and a research agenda for the next phase of digital agricultural transformation in India.
