Chapter-14: Agrovault: An Integrated Agri-Fintech Platform for Smallholder Financial Inclusion using AI Credit Scoring, Satellite Analytics, and Parametric Insurance

Although the agricultural sector plays a crucial role in emerging economies, being one of the largest sources of employment and contributing significantly to gross domestic product, access to finance remains one of the biggest challenges faced by smallholder farmers, with more than 1.4 billion small farmers without access to credit and insurance. This paper looks at the disruptive potential of Agri-FinTech solutions to fill the existing gap. Specifically, this paper discusses an agri-fin tech platform known as AgroVault, which is based on the AgroScore artificial intelligence engine, satellite monitoring, and parametric insurance, among other innovations. We first develop an architectural and algorithmic blueprint for data‑driven agricultural finance that replaces collateral‑ and bureau‑centric underwriting with multi‑signal risk scoring grounded in agronomic, behavioural, and market data. We then propose a four‑dimension impact assessment framework access, usage, quality, and welfare and apply it to empirical evidence from comparable deployments in India, Kenya, Bangladesh, and East Africa, as well as to the AgroVault design and interactive dashboard prototype. The synthesis indicates that NDVI‑augmented credit models can reduce default rates by 18–34 percent relative to bureau‑only baselines, while parametric, satellite‑triggered insurance products materially shorten claim settlement times and improve farmer satisfaction; integrated digital payments and market‑linkage modules further enhance farmgate incomes. Finally, we discuss regulatory, infrastructural, and ethical risks including algorithmic bias, basis risk, over‑indebtedness, and platform concentration and outline policy and design recommendations for responsible, interoperable Agri‑FinTech scale‑up in agrarian economies.
