Synopsis

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is one of the world's most important pulse crops because of its exceptional nutritional value, health-promoting properties, and contribution to sustainable agricultural systems. Rich in plant-based protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and diverse bioactive compounds, peas support human nutrition while contributing to the prevention and management of several chronic diseases. Beyond their nutritional significance, peas play a vital role in environmentally sustainable agriculture through biological nitrogen fixation, improved soil fertility, and reduced dependence on synthetic fertilizers, complementing the crop-diversification strategies discussed for Pakistan's land-use systems in Chapter 4. The crop also provides substantial economic opportunities owing to its increasing demand in food, feed, and value-added industries. Recent advances in crop improvement, processing technologies, and the expanding market for plant-based protein have further enhanced the commercial importance of pea cultivation worldwide. This chapter reviews the historical development, nutritional composition, health benefits, economic importance, environmental contributions, and future prospects of pea cultivation. It further discusses the role of peas in sustainable food systems, climate-smart agriculture, and rural economic development while highlighting opportunities for enhancing agricultural productivity and global food security.
