Synopsis

The current chapter focuses on the importance of green finance and natural capital investments for sustainable economic development with a global and Pakistan perspective. It calls for effective management of natural capital to yield long-term economic growth and for the financial system to be aligned with environmental sustainability. Based on international evidence, the chapter also reveals the development of green finance instruments such as green bonds, climate funds, and blended finance and their contribution to the financing of low-carbon and climate-resilient development pathways. It also examines the economic rationale for investing in ecosystems: forests, watersheds, soils, and other places, focusing on the role of these ecosystems in resilience, productivity, and well-being. The chapter reviews and explores the pertinent environmental issues in Pakistan such as water scarcity, land degradation, climate susceptibility and institutional disintegration, and examines the current green finance framework in Pakistan. It outlines key opportunities for Renewable energy, Sustainable agriculture, Watershed management and Ecosystem restoration and also highlights some issues regarding financial constraints, governance, and policy co-ordination. The chapter ends with a set of strategic pathways to mainstream green finance and natural capital in development planning, which demonstrates the need for inclusive, resilient and environmentally sustainable development.
