Chapter-01: Harvesting Health and Wealth: Charting the Questions that Nature-Based Solutions Must Answer

This opening chapter introduces Harvesting Health and Wealth: Nature-Based Solutions for Health and Prosperity as a response to the persistent fragmentation of research and policy across food security, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, nutrition, environmental sustainability, and green finance. It argues that these domains are interconnected components of a wider socio-ecological system and proposes the Harvesting Health and Wealth Framework (HHWF) as the volume's conceptual foundation. The framework connects natural capital, sustainable production, food systems, human development, the green economy, and sustainable prosperity within a regenerative feedback loop, where gains in one domain reinforce outcomes in others. Drawing on evidence developed across the subsequent chapters, this chapter identifies the costs of sectoral policymaking, highlights Pakistan as a setting where interdependencies among agriculture, food security, environmental sustainability, and economic development are particularly evident, and examines under-used nature-based interventions with cross-cutting benefits. It establishes seven guiding questions addressing sustainable agricultural production, resilient food systems, farm-level economic choices, biodiversity conservation, nature-based enterprises, green finance, and renewable energy adoption. Finally, the chapter outlines the volume's three-part thematic structure and positions individual chapters as complementary contributions to a shared question: whether lasting prosperity can be achieved without strengthening the ecological systems underpinning health, food security, and economic development.
